MOCA Simulation @ SPA

LEARNER OBJECTIVES:

  • Offer a contextual learning opportunity to assess and improve their practice in areas such as crisis management in a simulation setting at an ASA-endorsed activity
  • Realistically recreate challenging clinical cases to allow participants to problemā€solve in a manner that is similar to actual clinical experience
  • Provide an opportunity for physicians to improve their skills in Practice-Based Learning and Improvement

DESCRIPTION:
ABA diplomats must complete multiple activities over their 10-year MOCA cycle to demonstrate that they are participating in evaluation of their clinical practice and their engagement in practice improvement activities. In MOCA 2.0, diplomats must earn 25 points per five-year period for a total of 50 points during the 10-year MOCA cycle. Successful completion of the MOCA Simulation @ SPA activity will fulfill 25 points (ALL) of the required Part 4 activities for a five-year period.

THURSDAY, MARCH 14, 2019

SPPM WORKSHOP: Myth Busters (Part 1): Opioids Myths and Prescribing Safeguards for the Anesthesiologist

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to: 
* Define and clearly distinguish the following terms from one another: tolerance, dependence, misuse, aberrant behavior, addiction, and hyperalgesia. 
* Initiate a Patient Prescriber Agreement. 
* Recognize, document, and address aberrant drug-related behavior. 
* Utilize the state Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) report. 
* Interpret drug tests (screening and confirmatory) and appraise its utility and limitations. 
* Apply at least two risk tools to assess potential for opioid misuse. 
* Integrate Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) for opioid analgesics into clinical practice.

WORKSHOP: Pediatric Anesthesia Escape Room: Are You Up for the Challenge? [Sponsored by the Simulation SIG)

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to: 
* Recognize the benefits from use of an escape room platform to promote simulation principles. 
* Identify a variety of simulation technologies that can be utilized to develop relevant educational activities. 
* Develop team building and improved communication skills through the utilization of escape room principles. 
* Demonstrate effective crisis resource management skills which can be applicable to clinical practice. 


WORKSHOP: Seeking Competency in Professionalism

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to: 
* Identify the key features of and risk factors for Compassion Fatigue, and how it differs from Burnout 
* Develop strategies to reduce Compassion Fatigue and enhance Resilience 
* Describe the elements of Emotional Intelligence, and how they relate to workplace conflict management 
* Understand tools and metrics to take the team's "pulse", explore strategies for intervention 
* Leverage best practices to mitigate risk associated with conflict and provider dissatisfaction 
* Problem solve with colleagues and develop actionable steps for current individual problem areas

WORKSHOP: One-Lung Ventilation in Children

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to: 
* Describe the indications for one-lung ventilation (OLV) in children and the procedures that may require OLV in children 
* Compare and contrast the physiologic changes induced by OLV in children versus adults 
* Review current choices for OLV in infants, children, and adolescents 
* Assess the pros and cons of these different strategies and devices 
* Successfully perform lung isolation using a range of devices in manikins of all sizes


WORKSHOP: Cardiac Anesthesia NOT Required: A Short Course for the Non-Cardiac Pediatric Anesthesiologist

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to: 
* Gain a better understanding of the anatomy and physiology of common cardiac lesions. 
* Recognize pharmacology as related to commonly used medications and their effects in these patients. 
* Review monitoring considerations, both intra-operative and in the post-operative period. 
* Discuss fluid management, transfusion considerations, and oxygenation/ventilation strategies. 

 

WORKSHOP: Pediatric Patient Blood Management: Practical Applications for the Intraoperative Phase of Care 

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to: 
* Develop a basic knowledge of the various technical aspects of intraoperative PBM; 
* Identify special transfusion needs of the pediatric surgical patient; 
* Dscuss transfusion thresholds for the various blood components in the pediatric surgical patient; 
* Gain a basic understanding of point of care testing used in the pediatric surgical patient; 
* Understand the current evidence and role for whole blood administration in the pediatric surgical patient; 
* Develop a basic knowledge of existing massive transfusion protocols for pediatric surgical patients; 
* Discuss and share experiences about blood availability and administration for the pediatric surgical patient in low resource settings. 


WORKSHOP: Women in Anesthesia: Beyond Wellness and Work/Life Balance

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to: 
* Recognize difficulties maintaining a work/life balance 
* Explore options to overcome work/life stressors 
* Provide tools, exercises, materials to cope with work/life stressors and prevent burnout
