Overview

Abstracts must be submitted via the online submission system. The system allows saving abstracts as a draft in order to make changes. However, abstracts must be formally submitted before the deadline in order to be considered.

Key abstract submission guidelines:

• There is no limit to the number of abstracts that may be submitted.
• Abstracts must be written in grammatically correct English. Please be sure to review your abstract before clicking submit.
• Do not use all capital letters in your title, author information, body of abstract or references.
• If previously submitted to another meeting, an abstract may still be submitted if not prohibited by the other organization(s).
• The submitting author is required to ensure that all co-authors are aware of the abstract content before submission.
• Submission of an abstract is a commitment by the presenting author to attend the meeting in-person to present their work if the abstract is accepted.
• Please be sure that your institution will allow you to travel to the meeting BEFORE you submit your abstract.
• Poster presenters are responsible for their own expenses, including the meeting registration fee, travel, and accommodations.

Trainees and junior faculty are strongly encouraged to consult with a mentor prior to submitting an abstract.

Submission Content

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ABSTRACTS

**Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval or waiver required for submission**

• Airway
• Cardiac
• Education / Training
• Emerging Technology (e.g. AI, LLM, etc.)
• General Anesthesia
• Neuro
• Pain
• Quality/Safety/Outcomes (Safety/QA/QI Projects)
• Regional Anesthesia
• Other

Goal: To present a concise yet complete description of the study question, methodology and results. Sections below should be included for clarity.

1. Introduction and study question/aims/hypothesis - This should be clearly stated (may be divided into 2 sections if preferred)
2. Methods - How was this performed? What was the study design? What was the study population? What were the primary and secondary outcome variables? How was data analyzed?
3. Results - If table or figure is present, it is not necessary to restate the numbers in the text section - point out the big picture only.
4. Discussion - What do the results mean? Why are they important? Does the data support or refute the stated hypothesis?
5. Conclusions - One sentence will suffice
6. References - 3-5 citations will suffice

Each section in abstract should have one to three most relevant points of information for brevity; more details can be included in poster.

Additional Information
Submitting Author Details: The submitting author will receive all communications regarding the abstract and is responsible for informing the other authors, as necessary.

Co-Author(s) Details: Name, contact information, role (co-author, presenting author).

Text: Please write in real English - avoid jargon and use complete sentences and proper grammar. Use paragraph divisions for the sections - one long run-on paragraph is difficult to read.

Data: This is best presented, or augmented, by the inclusion of a table or figure. Ensure data is legible.

• Lack of data: Submission of research abstracts without data is not encouraged and is likely to get rejected. It is not acceptable to submit an abstract describing the research plan alone. The best chance of acceptance is granted only to submissions which include data and results.

Conclusions: Be cautious and reasonable, avoid the trap of the statement "safe and efficacious" when the study is not powered to make that statement. Similarly, a zero numerator demands the calculation of confidence intervals and great caution in interpretation.

Reporting Guidelines: The abstracts & posters must follow the EQUATOR (Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency Of health Research) guidelines for reporting. Here are examples of commonly submitted categories:

• Randomized Controlled Studies - CONSORT guidelines
• Observational Studies - STROBE guidelines
• Quality Improvement Studies - SQUIRE 2.0 guidelines
• Systematic Reviews - PRISMA guidelines

If there are other study designs, the authors can refer to equator network at this website https://www.equator-network.org/ to determine the appropriate category of submission and match with the guidelines.

CASE REPORTS OR MEDICALLY CHALLENGING CASES:

(Novel case reports with a discussion and lessons learned have higher chances of acceptance.)

The abstract/poster for case report should include (where pertinent):

1. Introduction/background - Please include a brief overview of the problem the case report addresses. Essentially what was the ongoing issue in the case? What is the message for the reader?
2. Learning objectives - What do you want the reader to gain after reading this case report?
3. Body of case report - This must include:
   1. Patient demographic details
   2. History and presentation
   3. Physical exam findings
   4. Any laboratory test or special investigation results
   5. Preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative course where applicable
   6. Patient outcome
   7. Pictures, graphs, OR records, etc. where applicable (please ensure proper permission obtained).
4. Conclusion and Lessons learnt - specify how the Case has changed your practice or resulted in additional pertinent research
5. References (if any)

Please edit carefully for grammar and spelling. Please consider review with senior author/attending prior to presentation.

Submission Instructions

The abstract submission process contains many steps. These steps should be completed in the order listed, although you can go back and edit information at any time. The steps do not have to be completed in one session.

**Do NOT submit any Abstract information in ALL CAPS (including the abstract title and author information).

Once an abstract is submitted, information cannot be edited.

The Body of the Abstract
The body of the abstract will be typed or pasted onto the online form. References should be included at the end of the abstract body.

Character Limit: 3300 The character limit includes Tables, Images & References.
Note: Additional files (tables, images, etc.) count as 300 characters each

Additional Files
If you are submitting supplemental graphic files with your abstract, please convert them to jpeg format at a width no greater than 600 pixels. This includes:

• Charts
• Graphs
• Tables
• Photographs
• Slides
• Anything other than the text content of your abstract

Please note that supplemental files in formats other than jpeg will not be accepted.

Important Considerations

• Abstracts are subject to rejection if all instructions have not been followed.
• No promotional content of a commercial entity may be included (brand/trade/product names, photos, logos, company names, etc.).
• If necessary for clarity, a trade/product name may be included parenthetically once in the Materials and Methods section, but no more, and not in the abstract title. If more than one company makes the product, all applicable trade names are identified.
• Any off-label indications should be clearly documented in the submission.

Ownership/Copyright
Authors retain ownership of their content and may reproduce or adapt it for other purposes. If the content is accepted for the SPA-AAP Pediatric Anesthesiology meeting, authors grant SPA a perpetual, royalty-free license to display and publish the work in any medium, with proper credit to the authors.

Conflicts of Interest Disclosure
All submissions require disclosure of financial or other relationships with ineligible companies producing, marketing, re-selling, or distributing health care goods or services consumed by, or used on, patients. Disclosure must include the company name(s) and nature of relationship (honoraria/expenses, consulting/advisory board, funded research, royalties/patent, stock options, equity position/ownership, employee, other similar relations). Disclosure is required for the submitting and presenting authors over the last 24 months.
