Bio

Ronald L. Blumoff, MD, MBA, FACS Dr. Ronald Blumoff is a native of University City, Missouri, but has lived in Texas for more than 40 years and considers Texas his home. He currently lives in Austin with his wife, Ann, whom he met while both were undergraduates at the University of Missouri. After graduating cum laude and AOA from St. Louis University Medical School, he completed his general surgery residency and vascular surgery fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was the Womack Scholar in Surgery. Following active duty as Chief of Surgery at the US Air Force Hospital at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma, Dr. Blumoff practiced vascular surgery in San Antonio, Texas. In addition to maintaining a busy vascular surgery practice, he was chosen for multiple leadership roles that included Chief of Surgery, Chief of Staff, Executive Board Member, and Chief of Surgical Services for the Methodist Hospital System in San Antonio, as well as Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. As a committed life-long learner, he completed a Master of Business Administration at University of Texas at San Antonio, mediation training at the University of Texas Law School, and executive coaching certification at Southern Methodist University (SMU). He has taught negotiation and conflict resolution at the graduate level as Executive Professor of Healthcare Leadership and Management at the Jindal School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas, as Adjunct Instructor at the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education & Human Development at SMU, and in the LEAD Program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Blumoff recognizes and fully appreciates that his medical, academic, and diverse leadership experiences have allowed him to pursue his current interests: teaching conflict resolution and negotiation, leadership advisory, coaching, and promoting meaningful dialogue among all healthcare stakeholders. .

Benjamin A. Farber, MD, is a pediatric surgeon at Children's Hospital at Montefiore and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr Farber’s clinical focus is in pediatric general and thoracic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and neonatal surgery. After receiving his Bachelor of Science in biology and Spanish at San Diego State University in 2008, Dr. Farber attended the George Washington University School of Medicine, earning his Doctor of Medicine in 2012. He began his postdoctoral training at Einstein with an internship and residency in general surgery. From 2014 to 2016, Dr. Farber was a research fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center on the pediatric surgical service, and the Rockefeller University Laboratory of Cellular Biophysics. Dr. Farber returned to Einstein in 2016 to complete his residency in general surgery, acting as administrative chief resident in his final year. In 2019, he pursued his pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Dr. Farber’s research interests include investigations into quality improvement, outcomes research, pediatric trauma and disparities in pediatric surgical care. He has shared his work through peer-reviewed journals as well as podium and poster presentations. Dr. Farber is board certified in general and pediatric surgery. He is a member of several professional associations including the American Medical Association, the Association of Academic Surgery, the American Academy of Pediatrics - Section on Surgery and is a member of the trauma committee in the American Pediatric Surgical Association. He has received many accolades during his residency and fellowship at Einstein including the Leo M. Davidoff Society for outstanding achievement in the teaching of medical students, the Henry L. Moses Award for Outstanding Paper in Basic Science and the Jedd B. Sereysky Humanism Prize.

Stephen Robert Hays, MS, MD, FAAP (he/they) joined the faculty of the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry as Professor of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine and Pediatrics in Feb 2024. They also serve as Director of Pediatric Pain Medicine at University of Rochester Medicine Golisano Children's Hospital. A native of Syracuse, NY and Presidential Scholar, Dr. Hays earned simultaneous B.S. / M.S. in Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry summa cum laude with Distinction in the Major from Yale University, New Haven, CT where they were elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa. They earned their M.D. from The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD where they remained for Internship & Residency in Pediatrics, Residency in Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine, and Fellowships in Pediatric Anesthesia & Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Hays is Board-Certified in Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Hospice & Palliative Medicine, and Pediatric Anesthesiology. Dr. Hays was appointed Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology & Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN in 1999, and was promoted to Associate Professor of Anesthesiology & Pediatrics in 2006. They developed the Vanderbilt Pediatric Pain Service and subsequently the Vanderbilt Pediatric Pain Clinic, and for many years served as Director of Pediatric Pain Services at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt (MCJCHV). Dr. Hays received a 2004-2005 Vanderbilt Department of Anesthesiology Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the 2011 Sandidge Pediatric Pain Management Award in Recognition of Outstanding Contributions to Pediatric Pain Management at MCJCHV. Dr. Hays moved to the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA as Clinical Professor of Anesthesia & Pediatrics and Director of Pediatric Pain Services at University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital in 2019. They served for several years as Vice-Chair for Faculty Affairs & Development in the Department of Anesthesia of the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Dr. Hays is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and a member of the AAP including its Sections on Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine (SOAPM), Critical Care Medicine, and Hospice & Palliative Medicine (SOHPM). They serve on the AAP SOHPM Membership & Internal Communications Work Group, and have served on the AAP SOAPM Executive Committee. They are a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), and have served on the ASA Committees on Pediatric Anesthesiology and Hospice & Palliative Medicine. A Full Examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), they serve on the ABA Standardized Oral Exam and Objective Standardized Clinical Examination Committees, and as the ABA representative to the American Board of Internal Medicine Hospice & Palliative Medicine Advisory Committee. Dr. Hays is a member of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia (SPA), and currently Vice President of the Society for Pediatric Pain Medicine (SPPM), a section of SPA, having previously served on the SPPM Board of Directors and then as SPPM Secretary-Treasurer. Dr. Hays' clinical practice focuses on perioperative care of children of all ages, with particular interests in pediatric regional anesthesia, pediatric pain management, and pediatric palliative care. Their clinical time is divided among the pediatric operating room, the inpatient pediatric pain & palliative care services, and various pediatric outpatient clinics. Their research interests have included industry-funded pharmaceutical licensing studies of analgesic agents in children, as well as multi-institutional studies of potential pediatric anesthetic neurotoxicity. Dr. Hays regularly presents at local, regional, and national meetings, and has been a named author on numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts, textbook chapters, and online enduring educational content. Dr. Hays and their wife Deborah have two adult sons.

Dr. Jones is a Pediatric Anesthesiologist at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, and is Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is currently a Co-Director of the Anesthesiology Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Nemours Children’s Hospital Delaware. Dr. Jones is proudly Jamaican by birth, and earned her Bachelor of Science (Hons) and Medical Degrees from the University of the West Indies at the Mona Campus in Kingston, Jamaica. After completing her internship and working as a House Officer in Anesthesiology at the Bustamante Hospital for Children and the Kingston Public Hospital, she completed her Residency in Anesthesiology at the University of South Florida. This was followed by a Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship at the University of Miami. She is board certified in General and Pediatric Anesthesiology. Dr. Jones is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia (SPA), the Delaware Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, and the Florida Medical Association. She is a member of the SPA Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), as well as the SPA Global Committee. She is also a member of the Ad hoc Committee on DEI/Quality Improvement of the SPA. She practices primarily at Nemours Children’s Hospital Delaware and has been involved in pipeline programs for the recruitment of under-represented minority high school and college students into healthcare-related careers for over a decade, and has mentored Anesthesiology Residents and Medical students with interest in Pediatric Anesthesiology. Her outreach work takes her to her native country of Jamaica, where she leads the Jamaica/US Anesthesiology team at Bustamante Children’s Hospital performing Living- Related Donor Liver transplants for pediatric patients from Jamaica and the Caribbean, who would otherwise succumb to the effects of end-stage liver disease. Bio

Elizabeth O’Brien is an attending anesthesiologist in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and an Assistant Professor at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. O’Brien attended the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine prior to completing anesthesiology residency at Dartmouth Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, where she was chief resident. She then completed a combined-two-year academic fellowship in pediatric anesthesia and research at CHOP, during which time she was an Associate Fellow in the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. Her work includes research on pediatric perioperative outcomes with a focus on care for neurodivergent and neurodiverse children, point-of-care ultrasound, and pediatric airway management. She is also a student in the Master of Applied Science in Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality program at Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health and has an enthusiasm for quality improvement. On a national level, Dr. O’Brien is a member of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia Improvement Network (SPAIN), as well as the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia’s Quality and Safety Committee and the Wake-Up Safe Committee. Clinically, Dr. O’Brien is passionate about pediatric pain management and serves on CHOP’s Acute Pain Team, as well as care for children with complex congenital heart disease requiring non-cardiac surgery.

Dr. Olbrecht was born and raised in New Jersey but spent part of her childhood in Switzerland. She attended Cornell University where she studied Biology and Spanish. She graduated from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2007 and completed her residency in Anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital. She joined the faculty at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in 2012 after finishing her pediatric anesthesia fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She received her MBA from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 2015. At Cincinnati Children’s, she was an Associate Professor in Anesthesiology and Pediatrics and the Director of Quality Improvement and Accreditation for Procedural Sedation for the institution. She was also the Associate Director of Research and the Clinical Director of the Procedure Center. She joined Nationwide Children’s Hospital in 2021 and spent two years as the Vice Chair of Quality Improvement and Development and the Director of Fetal Anesthesiology. She is currently the Chair for the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware Valley and a Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Society for Pediatric Sedation (SPS) as well as on the Executive Committee and is the Chair of the Quality and Safety Committee. Dr. Olbrecht’s research interest lies in improving pediatric pain with innovative, non-pharmacologic therapies. She began her current research in the use of biofeedback-based virtual reality for pain management in 2018. Since 2018, she has received over $1.5 million in funding both for her research and device development and she currently has an R34 and Blueprint MedTech grant from the NIH to develop a clinical trial protocol for the integration of biofeedback-based virtual reality in perioperative pain management and to further develop the technology. She looks forward to the day when VR becomes part of everyday pain management. Outside of work, Dr. Olbrecht enjoys spending time with her family, including her husband and 6-year-old daughter, Marcella. She is an avid equestrian and enjoys English riding and jumping. She also loves to travel and explore new parts of the world.

Dr. Reece-Nguyen is a board-certified general and pediatric anesthesiologist and Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford Children’s Hospital where he serves as a DEI leader in his department, throughout Stanford Medicine, and at the National level as Chair of the SPA-DEI committee, the Vice-Chair of the ASA LGBTQ+ Ad Hoc committee, and National Co-Director of the Perioperative Anesthesiology Registry for Transgender Adults and Youth (PARTAY) Collaborative. As a cisgender gay man, Dr. Reece-Nguyen understands the importance of LGBTQ+ advocacy work and the ever-increasing need for improved LGBTQ+ medical education, focusing specifically on the value of gender-affirming perioperative care. In his role as the Medical Director of the Gender Recognition and Affirmative Care through Education (GRACE) Team at Stanford Medicine and as the Director of LGBTQ+ Health for Stanford Anesthesiology Office of Diversity, Inclusivity, and Health Equity, Dr. Reece-Nguyen’s work promotes perioperative gender-affirming care education, quality improvement, and research efforts aimed at improving the healthcare experience and perioperative outcomes for all gender-diverse patients. He is proud to serve as Co-Director of the Perioperative Anesthesiology Registry for Transgender Adults and Youth (PARTAY) Collaborative, which is a multi-institution collaboration that evaluates practices and optimizes clinical practice guidelines for the perioperative care of TGD individuals undergoing both gender-affirming and non-gender-affirming surgeries and procedures. I am a Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Geffen SOM at Ronald Reagan Medical Center. I am Board Certified in Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, and Pediatric Anesthesiology. Currently I am the Director of the Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship and Medical Director of the Pediatric Perioperative Surgical Home. I began teaching at the UCLA Simulation Center in 2006. My focus is on teaching anesthesiology residents and fellows how to manage different critical events scenarios. The sessions include a debriefing of events and discussion of differential diagnosis as well as crisis management. My philosophy is to guide trainees through critical situations and practice management of complicated situations so that when crises occur in real life, they will be more prepared. I also developed a simulation program for advanced pediatric anesthesia training. This program is offered twice a year for pediatric anesthesia fellows and provides specialty specific critical events scenarios. I am also an instructor for ABA MOCA simulation, I have been participating since its inception to advocate for learning through simulation. I believe simulation promotes patient safety through refinement of skills, team management, and communication. Additionally, I lead in-situ mock codes for various nursing units, including preoperative and postoperative units across multiple surgical sites at UCLA. These sessions are designed to enhance communication, teamwork, and collaboration among medical and nursing staff. Additionally, these sessions offer Continuing Medical Education (CME) opportunities for nursing staff, contributing to their ongoing professional development and ensuring high standards of care. In addition to refining technical competence, my focus with simulation-based training is to help healthcare professionals build strong communication skills that reflect the diverse and evolving needs of the populations they serve. My goal is to support continuous learning and professional growth, ensuring that medical teams are equipped not only with clinical expertise but also with the cultural competence required to deliver compassionate, high-quality care to all patients.

Keith J Ruskin, MD is a Professor of Anesthesia and Critical Care and Director of Aerospace Medicine at the University of Chicago. His clinical practice focuses on neurosurgical anesthesia. His major academic interests include neurosurgical anesthesia, safety and human performance, and aerospace medicine. Keith has worked as part of a team to develop guidelines for screening morbidly obese pilots for obstructive sleep apnea and for the management of in-flight cardiac arrest. He has developed a fatigue risk management program for physicians who must work overnight shifts and participated in a NASA workshop on space torpor. Keith is also interested in the terrestrial applications for this work, writing articles on the role of automation in clinical care and how personal protective equipment affects human performance. His funded research involves the role of alarms, alerts, and warnings in Air Traffic Control, and he is currently helping to develop a new arrival procedure. Keith has published original research articles, review articles, and textbooks on a variety of topics, including willingness to fly during the COVID-19 pandemic, management of critical events in the operating room, and other topics related to patient safety. He serves on the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ Patient Safety Editorial Board and Committee on Patient Safety Education and is Chair of the Aerospace Medical Association’s Aerospace Human Performance Committee. He holds the titles of Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association, Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He is also a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Keith grew up in Miami Beach. He received a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Biotechnology from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He then attended medical school at the University of Miami School of Medicine and completed his residency at New York University Medical Center. He spent 20 years on the faculty of Yale University before moving to the University of Chicago. Keith has had a lifelong interest in aviation and currently holds a Commercial Pilot certificate with Airplane Single-Engine Land and Sea, Multi-Engine Land, and Instrument Airplane ratings. He also holds a Second in Command type rating for the Douglas DC-3. He is currently based at Chicago Executive Airport (KPWK), where he flies a Cessna Skylane, but would leave anesthesia and fly a Caravan if Mokulele Airlines wants to hire him.

Bio

Dr. Mihaela Visoiu is a pediatric anesthesiologist with expertise in perioperative pain management and pediatric regional anesthesia. Most of her clinical time is spent in the operating rooms, rounding on the floor, providing patient care, and teaching and supervising student nurse anesthetists and anesthesiology residents and fellows. Dr. Visoiu collaborates with various surgical services to implement new protocols for postoperative pain control. In her research, she develops new techniques for the placement and use of ultrasound-guided nerve blocks in children, infants, and neonates and compares those techniques with established methods for pain control. Dr. Visoiu is interested in using clonidine as an adjunct medication for pediatric regional anesthesia and has investigated postoperative pain control outcomes and pain perception in teenagers and the transgender population. Her goals are to improve pediatric perioperative pain management, the safety of pediatric regional anesthesia, and family satisfaction with pain control. Dr. Visoiu’s research has been featured on the cover of the journal Pediatric Anesthesia three times (October 2018, March 2019, and January 2022). Dr. Visoiu has significant experience participating in and leading multi-center clinical trials to understand the efficacy and safety of novel approaches to pain management and has extensive experience in managing large grant-funded projects. Dr. Visoiu worked with Dr. Sadhasivam as a coinvestigator in his NIH studies and will serve as principal investigator in a funded pupillometry NIH study. Dr. Visoiu is also interested in advancing pediatric regional anesthesia education by developing ultrasound regional anesthesia simulators. In collaboration with the UPMC Department of Radiology and the Swanson School of Engineering and Department of Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh, she developed a neonatal ultrasound epidural caudal block simulator for single injection and catheter placement (U.S. provisional patent application, due for nationalization 04/2024). This simulator was featured by Pitt Fall Med Magazine 2023 in the article” Idea to Reality.”

As a pediatric anesthesiologist at Boston Children’s Hospital, I am constantly involved in educating our trainees to provide safe and high-quality care for our precious patients. My commitment to fellow and resident training goes well beyond clinical care supervision and involves a variety of educational activities I have helped developed in the department, such as Morning report lecture series, Simulation course for our pediatric anesthesia fellows. I am the Director of Simulation for the Department of Anesthesia at BCH and one of the ACD of the Simulation center at BCH. I am closely involved in curriculum development and I play a leading role in different medical simulation structures and projects at departmental, hospital and national level. One of these, the Simulation program for the Pediatric Anesthesia fellowship that I have developed and lead, is considered by the pediatric anesthesia fellows to be one of the educational highlights of our fellowship. I am also one of the leaders for the surgical team training sponsored by CRICO. I am one of the founding members of the specialized care team at BCH that is involved with the perioperative care for transgender and gender diverse population(GASPP). As such I led a small team in preparing and publishing clinical guidelines and ERAS protocols on the Anesthesia site for some of the surgeries for this patient population. We have conducted different lectures on topics relevant to the gender diverse patients. I am senior author of a publication describing the experiences we had at BCH taking care of transgender patients. As of 2021 I completed certification in life coaching. I am coaching with national and international organizations like PCS, Better Together Physicians Coaching and AMWA. In the current social situation physician burnout is considered crisis that needs immediate attention and life coaching has been incorporated in many institutions with promising results. I am deeply committed to supporting my fellow physicians on their journeys to greater balance, resilience, and personal fulfillment. With over 20 years in clinical practice and certifications from The Life Coach School and the Certified Life Coach Institute, I understand firsthand the pressures physicians face. Driven by a passion for helping others find peace and purpose in their careers, I provides one-on-one and group coaching with a focus on self-compassion, emotional resilience, and sustainable growth as well as I lecture on the value of coaching for achieving balanced and fulfilled life and build a passionate and well rounded carrier.

Bio

Dr. Chelsea Willie is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology who is a pediatrician turned pediatric intensivist turned pediatric anesthesiologist that now splits her time between the operating room (OR) and pediatric intensive care unit (ICU). This allows for a unique experience of combining several skills sets between specialties and forges an opportunity to improve communication and patient management between these environments. Dr. Willie is nationally known for engaging in alternative modes of education including creating escape rooms to teach medical concepts, creating breakout boxes as a smaller experience, and instilling gamification principles into teaching endeavors. It is important that she not only “enjoys” teaching, but that she is effective in the process, so continues to search for ways to make learning both applicable and fun for adult learners. Most of her energy has been spent using simulation to teach and she serves as the director for the CW Midwest Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship Bootcamp which is a regional event for pediatric anesthesia fellows to immerse in simulation events at the start of their training and allows faculty from neighboring Midwest institutions to network while providing multiple perspectives to educate fellows. Dr. Willie shares her enthusiasm for education by directing workshops at multiple national and international conferences, including the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia, the Society of Education in Anesthesia, and the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare. Since July 2019, Dr. Willie has served as one of the Associate Program Directors for the Anesthesiology core residency program with a focus on developing the CA-1 resident curriculum. In this position she mentors, teaches, evaluates, heavily recruits, and gives some of the best hugs! She has dived into her passion to lift others and ensure that the perceived lesser among us have a voice as a co-chair for the Children’s Wisconsin Medstaff JEDI committee with a focus on health equity. This passion has expanded as she was selected to be the Director for DEI for the Department of Anesthesiology in July 2022. These positions have led to multiple opportunities for self-development through completion of the Kern Kinetic3 program, the AAMC LEAD program, the WLLC (Women’s Leadership Learning Collaborative) program, and most recently completed her Heroic GRAD public speaking course. She is clearly always looking for ways to transform into the best version of herself and encourages others to do the same. When she is not moving the career needle forward, Dr. Willie is active at church teaching 6-year-olds, taking ballroom dance lessons, enjoying a theater performance, and traveling around the world. She is always willing to open her home to share her Southern hospitality. Yes, she sleeps…but most importantly…she lives!

Samuel Yanofsky, M.D, MSEd. is a Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology and Medical Education at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, where he attends at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles in the Department of Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine. I am a graduate of McGill University, Montréal, Québec (baccalaureate of science in physiology) and St Louis University medical school. I completed a residency in Anesthesiology at University of Connecticut Health center and continued with a two-year fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. I graduated with a Master of Science in Medical Education from USC Rossier School of Education. Presently, I am responsible for supporting faculty development within the department. I served a six-year term including being president of the Pediatric Anesthesiology program directors association within the Society of Pediatric Anesthesiology (SPA). Within the Masters of Academic Medicine at USC Keck School of medicine program I am part of team of faculty training mid-level health care professionals in medical education focusing on leadership and organizational change. Presently, on a national level, I serve on the Board of Directors for the Society for Education in Anesthesia and I am member of the executive education committee for the SPA. In addition, I serve on the Woman’s Empowerment Leadership Initiative steering committee designing the leadership curriculum to further promote woman in their career as leaders in pediatric anesthesiology within the SPA. Further, I have mentored in establishing the new physician well-being committee for the SPA. I have developed and delivered many workshops and presentations on topics related to learning principles, teaching, evaluation, ACGME competencies, motivation, leadership, team development and physician well-being to a variety of health care professions’ faculty members and trainees. My area of research is in assessment and evaluation in Graduate Medical Education and Professional Development.
