On behalf of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia (SPA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section on Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, I am excited to invite you to register for this year’s Pediatric Anesthesiology 2018 meeting at the amazing JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort and Spa.  Known for its year-round sun and warm temperatures, Phoenix, Arizona anchors a multicity metropolitan area known as the Valley of the Sun.  Between soaking in the highlights of this wonderful host city, this year’s planning committee has put together an exciting program that includes relevant topics to anesthesiologists who care for children of all ages. 

Pediatric Anesthesiology 2018 opens Friday, March 23, 2018 following two outstanding meetings from the Congenital Cardiac Anesthesia Society and the Society for Pediatric Pain Medicine on Thursday, March 22, 2018.  Over the course of three fun-filled days, the meeting offers attendees a maximum of 30.25 CME credits.  The sessions delivered by the experts in our field address a host of exciting topics including pediatric trauma, controversies in regional anesthesia, pediatric surgery and anesthesia in low resource settings, preoperative evaluation of the child with congenital heart disease, pediatric cardiomyopathies, the FDA, perioperative economics, minimally invasive surgery in neonates, button battery ingestions, the difficult pediatric airway, ethical dilemmas in pediatric anesthesia, death by PowerPoint, and the importance of mentoring for career advancement.   The meeting will close on Sunday morning with updates from the SPA Young Investigators and the Editors Picks from Anesthesia and AnalgesiaAnesthesiology, and Pediatric Anesthesiology; as well as an exciting round of Jeopardy - where this year - East will meet West in an epic showdown!

This year’s Robert M. Smith Award will be presented to Dr. Robert Friesen from Children’s Hospital Colorado for his many contributions to pediatric anesthesia.  Dr. Arturo Gonzalez will deliver the AAP Advocacy lecture titled, “Unique Healthcare Challenges in Immigrant and Refugee Children.”  Dr. Gonzalez is a pediatrician practicing in Scottsdale, Arizona and is an active member of the Real Arizona Coalition S.A.N.E. Program for U.S. Immigration Reform lead by The Honorable Sandra Day O'Connor, Former Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. 

The program features 18 workshops including six new workshops covering a wide range of topics including professional development, simulation, technology in the ORs, the many different anesthesia societies and special interest groups, and scientific writing.  Beyond our workshops offerings, the program includes 42 opportunities to learn from your colleagues from across the country through PBLD sessions.

Along with the meeting program’s co-chairs, Drs. Melissa Brooks Peterson and Tarun Bhalla, we urge you to join us in Phoenix where this year’s meeting will only serve to grow your love and knowledge of pediatric anesthesia!
