Welcome!

Dr. CladisWelcome to the 2013 annual fall meeting of the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia. My Co-Chair, Jim Fehr, and I would like to invite you to join us in lovely San Francisco for this educational event. This meeting’s theme is neonatology and will be explored thorough the PBLD’s and three of the four sessions. The faculty, representing institutions from across North America, were selected because they bring unique expertise to this area of pediatric anesthesia.

The day will open up with PBLDs that highlight the neonatal theme. The first session of the day reviews important elements related to the clinical care of the neonate. We are honored to have Dr. Donna Ferriero start this session. She is an internationally recognized pediatric neurologist, the Chair of Pediatrics at UCSF, and one of the premier authorities on neonatal neurologic injuries.

The second session will focus on the perioperative communication and relationship between the pediatric anesthesiologist and the neonatal intensive care unit. The panelists will discuss the perioperative patient safety issues related to these relationships and potential solutions to enhance them.

The third session is a simulation-based session with audience participation and clinical scenarios emphasizing dilemmas in the care of the neonate. The fourth and final session is timely in light of the legalization of medical marijuana in several states including California. This pro-con debate should be both informative and entertaining.

I would like to thank the faculty for their hard work in putting together their sessions. I would especially like to thank the individuals that worked by my side to make this meeting happen. This includes my meeting co-chair Jim Fehr, Shobha Malviya, and Kim Battle.

Please join us for this wonderful meeting. I look forward to seeing you in California!

EDUCATION MISSION STATEMENT

The Annual Meeting will focus on topics of interest to those who provide anesthesia, sedation, pain management, and critical care services to infants and children. The overall goals for attendees of the program are to reinforce and enhance their existing fund of knowledge, and to introduce them to new and state-of-the-art techniques and information that affect their practice and improve the perioperative/critical care of pediatric patients.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This program is intended for anesthesiologists and other practitioners who care for children in their practice of anesthesiology and/or critical care. It is also intended for clinical and basic science researchers whose areas of investigation relate to pediatric anesthesia.

ACCREDITATION & DESIGNATION

The Society for Pediatric Anesthesia is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Society for Pediatric Anesthesia designates this Live activity for a maximum of 7 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
