Courses

Patient safety - a systems approach to minimize errors
Upon completion of this lecture, the participant will understand the role of medical errors in patient safety: role of process improvement, practice guidelines and adverse event reporting in improving outcomes and maximizing patient safety

Anaphylaxis
Upon completion of this lecture, the participant will have an updated understanding of the causes, mechanism, presentation, evaluation and treatment of perioperative anaphylaxis. Causes of anaphylaxis including drug and latex allergy will be discussed.

Unexpected Cardiac Arrest
Upon completion of this lecture, the participant will be informed of the most common reasons for unexpected intraoperative cardiac arrest, strategies for optimizing outcome, and prognosis.

Managing After Bad Outcomes: Personal/Professional
Upon completion of this lecture, the participant will be familiar with the personal and professional impacts of dealing with unexpected adverse patient events associated with anesthetic management. Strategies for assisting personnel involved in such events will be discussed.

Managing After Bad Outcomes: Legal/Media
Upon completion of this lecture, the participant will understand issues of litigation and media involvement after adverse events. Strategies for handling legal and media involvement will be discussed.

Managing After Bad Outcomes: Sentinel Event Process
Upon completion of this lecture, the participant will be familiar with the JCAHO requirements for investigation of sentinel events, including definition of sentinel events and how such investigations are conducted and conclusions implemented.

Industrial Symposium - Nova-Nordisk
Looking Toward the Future: Treatment of Bleeding Episodes in the Pediatric Patient Population

Anesthesia and Pediatric Diseases
Transplant Patients and Their Medical Conditions/Therapies: Implications for Perioperative Management

Upon completion of this lecture, the participant will be familiar with the impact on anesthetic management in patients who need or have had transplants. How alterations in anatomy/physiology caused by disease/drugs affect response to anesthetic agents will be discussed.

Patients with Congenital Heart Disease for Non-Cardiac Surgery
Upon completion of this lecture, the participant will understand the pathophysiological principles that pertain to the management of children with congenital heart disease undergoing anesthesia, and will be able to develop strategies for anesthetic management in a variety of states of cardiac physiology.

Jeopardy
Common problems in anesthetizing infants and children will be debated in a lively format by both moderator/panelists and audience participants. The participant will be familiar with a variety of potential solutions to these problems.

AAP Advocacy Lecture
After attendance of this lecture, the attendee will be familiar with recent innovations in palliative care strategies for children and the impact such strategies have on the lives of children and their families. Issues of pain management and other symptom control will be discussed.
