Pediatric Anesthesiology 2003

Welcome

I invite you to join your colleagues and their families at Pediatric Anesthesiology 2003, the eighth annual joint Winter Meeting of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia and the Section on Anesthesiology and Pain Management of the American Academy of Pediatrics. This year's program will take place February 20 23, 2003 at the Sanibel Harbour Resort and Spa, which was an outstanding venue for the winter meeting in 2000. This year's program is an exciting blend of the scientific and practical, research and clinical aspects of pediatric anesthesiology.

The meeting will present speakers who are experts in the fields of anesthesiology, pediatrics, and medicolegal issues. Planned topics include:

Sleep Apnea Physiologic and Clinical Correlates covering anatomic and physiologic basis of sleep apnea, methodology and interpretation of sleep studies, perioperative management strategies in children and sleep apnea

Spine Surgery: the Big Picture will focus on new surgical techniques for spine surgery, neurophysiologic monitoring techniques and implications for anesthetic management, postoperative pain management, and blood conservation and administration strategies

Medicolegal Issues for the Anesthesiologist Caring for Children including documentation recommendations, liability issues, malpractice insurance issues. This session will offer opportunity for audience questions and discussion with an expert panel.

Oral and Poster Abstract Presentations: Expert moderated poster discussions include topics of clinical research, practical techniques and basic science investigation. Opportunities to discuss techniques and investigation with authors and experts abound.

AAP Advocacy Lecture and Awards

Workshops complement the plenary sessions and include intensive exposure to:

Airway Management including lightwand, largyneal mask airway, and fiberoptic techniques

Pain Management spinal and epidural perioperative management techniques new for acute pain, routine and complex blocks, acupuncture.

Designing Clinical Trials practical information for single and multicenter trials.

The program will be rounded out with refresher courses covering basic issues in pediatric anesthesiology, and problem-based learning discussions (PBLD) for case discussion with experts in a small-group format. The meeting will continue to employ the popular real-time computerized audience response polling system to survey audience composition and practice patterns. The meeting will conclude with the perennially popular Jeopardy session.

This meeting would not take place without the collaborative efforts of many others, including the SPA Committee on Education, the Executive Committee of the AAP Section on Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. Thanks to them and many others, attendance at Pediatric Anesthesiology 2003 will offer manifold opportunities for learning, debate and growth (and fun!) for all.
